Genetic Counseling
What is genetic counseling?
Genetic counseling is the process of assessing and interpreting an individual’s personal and family health history, often in the context of genetic test results, to help an individual understand their risk of disease. Genetic counseling helps people to make informed decisions about their healthcare and adapt to the medical, familial, and psychological implications of a genetic condition.
Genetic counselors are board certified healthcare professionals with advanced training in medical genetics and counseling. They can work in a variety of settings, including reproductive, oncology, pediatrics, cardiology, neurology, and others. Genetic counselors can assess an individual's personal and family history to determine a client's risk for disease and if genetic testing is clinically recommended. They also educate clients on genetics, genetic testing options, and other considerations related to genetic testing. Genetic counselors order genetic testing and explain the results and their implications to clients and their families. They can also facilitate genetic counseling and testing for family members who are at risk to have the same condition.
Who are genetic counselors?
Genetic counselors are certified by the American Board of Genetic Counselors. In many states, genetic counselors are also required to be licensed.
What to expect during a genetic counseling appointment
Once you schedule your appointment, you will receive a link to sign up for HealthyGene's online patient portal. Before your appointment, you will be asked to sign consent forms and complete intake paperwork in the patient portal. You will also be asked to provide your personal and family medical history using a secure family health history software. You can also upload any pertinent medical records or previous genetic test results that you would like your genetic counselor to review prior to your appointment. By completing this prior to your appointment, we will be able to focus on your goals rather than information gathering.
You will have the choice between a video call or a phone call for your appointment. If you selected video call, you will receive an email with a link and instructions on how to access your appointment. If you selected phone call, your genetic counselor will call you at the time of your appointment. We recommend video appointments taken from a computer so that your genetic counselor can share their screen during your appointment. This way, you'll be able to see your family tree (pedigree) and other helpful visuals.
