Do I need to have a copy of my family member's genetic test results?
It is highly recommended that you provide a copy of your family member's genetic test results for your genetic counselor to review. Without their report, we are not able to know the exact gene and specific gene mutation that is present in your family. It is ideal to have this information so your genetic counselor can give you accurate information and ensure you are having the most appropriate genetic test. If you have a copy of your relative's test results, you can upload them to the patient portal.
If you are not able to get a copy of their result, we can still proceed with the appointment and testing based on the information you know. If your family member was tested through HealthyGene, we will need your family member to sign a release form so that we may share their genetic test results with you.
What information will be covered during the pre-test appointment?
During the pre-test appointment, we will review your personal and family medical history, your family member's genetic test result, genetic testing options for you, possible results, benefits and limitations of genetic testing, and how the results could impact your future healthcare decisions and your family members.
What genetic testing options are available through a personal history appointment with HealthyGene?
The exact genetic test(s) recommended is dependent on your personal and family history and your goals for genetic testing. Most commonly, we will recommend testing for just the gene mutation in your family member, but sometimes a panel with multiple genes will be recommended.
Can my partner, family member, or friend attend?
Yes, you are welcome to have a guest attend the consultation, as long as they live in a state HealthyGene serves.
Is genetic testing covered as part of the package?
No, but it may be covered by your insurance. Genetic testing for a known gene mutation in the family is often covered by insurance plans. If your insurance does cover testing, it is still subject to the deductible and any co-insurance required by your plan. Our laboratory partner will contact you if your out-of-pocket cost will be over $100. If you choose not to use insurance or if your insurance does not cover genetic testing, the fee charged by our laboratory partner is typically between $250 and $350.
Does HealthyGene accept insurance?
We currently do not accept insurance for our genetic counseling services. However, we can provide a superbill upon request which you can submit to your insurance for potential reimbursement. Please note, this is for our pre-test and result consultations only. The genetic testing itself may be covered by your insurance.
